A healthy body with healthy blood, healthy fluid system, and healthy cells functions in a slightly alkaline state, and strives to maintain a pH of 7.4. In order to maintain this internal alkaline environment, it relies heavily on the body’s stores of alkaline minerals such as calcium, magnesium, iron and potassium. Naturally, our diets are the major sources of these minerals, and so the food we eat plays a vital role in helping to maintain correct acid-alkaline balance. When the system becomes acidic, biochemical “buffers” in the blood help to preserve alkalinity. The body also compensates for high levels of acidic by-products by depositing these acids into tissues and joints, and/or drawing out alkaline reserves from the bones. This helps to explain why an overly acidic body is commonly one with a lot of pain and inflammation, and possibly low bone density too.
